With ‘The Three Army-Surgeons’ as the basis of what we were to work from, creating the design for an interior hall of an Inn. The first thing that I did was to brainstorm some basic ideas of words/objects/things that I thought related to an Inn or Tavern. This gave me a few rough assumptions that I could to build upon visually.
Things such as the signs reading “Ye Olde Villagers Inn” hanging outside or above the bar perhaps.
I also thought of things old oil lanterns & candles for lighting.
Barrels of Wine or even Gunpowder in long rows of storage racks.
Old Bar Stools, antique chest/trunk.
Fire Places with hunting trophies (the heads of wild animals) hanging on the mantel.

Traditionally New England Inns and Taverns are around the 18th centaury, and usually had a timber framework or support. Thinking laterally I found some similarities in material I could look at in such films as the Pirates of the Caribbean.
With those thoughts in my mind I just started doodling thumbnails.
Whilst Drawing I actually found that I was more concerned with how to go about depicting the space i.e.: (spherically distorting a room or looking at it from a low angle, etc.) rather than trying to add a lot of the specific details I had been thinking about.

The Final thumbnail I chose to refine further was the bottom design with large central support column, beams of timber jutting out across the ceiling and a flight of stairs leading up to the Innkeepers quarters. I felt this was the design that projected the feeling of a tavern or Inn the most.
The way I stated this design was simply drawing a barrel, which ended up my central support in the room and ended up pushing the circular dimensions of the interior. Kegs of Ale on tap behind the bar, and the entrance situated next to the Bar so the bar tender could keep an eye on who came and went.
Below are the final designs, a raw scan & then final ‘Levelled’ and cleaned version.
